It can be argued that you’ll never buy a more important piece of cycling gear, so it’s important to get this one right. The good news is that all certified helmets provide a standard level of protection. Be sure to choose one that’s CPSC or Snell certified. Beyond that, there are other recent innovations such as MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection), a system that includes a low-friction layer inside the helmet to reduce rotational forces that occur in certain impacts. The second critical factor when choosing a bike helmet is fit. For a helmet to be effective, it must fit properly. Most performance helmets come in various sizes for adults and have a number of adjustments to dial in the fit so that it’s both protective and comfortable. And of course comfort is key too.
