The Soma Hwy One Handlebar is a refreshing modern take on a classic design. These classy road drop bars feature a round, compact bend and a shallow drop put a variety of hand positions easily within reach. The comfortable shape of the Soma Hwy One makes getting into a comfortable ride position no problem and the compact bend puts your brake levers in a close enough position that you won't have to stretch when its time to spend some time on the hoods. An excellent choice for your vintage road bike, and just as at home on a modern bike, the Soma Hwy One keeps what has worked in the past and adds a taste of the present in the process.
These Soma Hwy One Bars replaced the so-called Ergonomic Bars on my Carbon Trek Road Bike. The additional width (44 cm) provided much needed leg room when standing, and the horizontal space needed for gripping the upper bar with aerobars in place, while the 130 mm curl brought the lower grips up. The brake hoods are also more accessible. With everything right there, it rides like a different machine, comfortable and accessible. I also gave them a strength test, with my foot and upper body. No deformation. Strong, light, and perfect geometry. It doesn't get any better.
Some hwy one bars with Deda Green tap, set up to train indoors...
THE solution to uncomfortable bars on an old steel bike. The area behind the brake hood has a nice horizontal profile, and the drop is shallow, gradual and long providing you with many hand positions in the drops. Not a flexy bar either, and I'm talking about the 26.0 version.
Great option for putting compact ergonomic bars on a vintage bike
I got these 26 mm Soma Hwy One bars (44 cm width) and paired them with the 26 mm Nitto quill stem on my old steel road bike from the 80s. The bars slid into and through the one-bolt clamp of the quill stem easily. I did not have to use force, just a little rotating and puzzle solving to slide it in. Although the bars are ergonomic in the drops, the curves are still smooth (no sharp corners), making it possible to maneuver them through the old style stem clamp. I am so happy now that I have wider bars with shorter reach and more comfortable drop positions! The ergonomic shape of these bars makes it very pleasant to ride with your hands on the forward curve of the drops as well as down on the back of the drops (especially for hill climbing). I installed aero brake levers, and these bars had a convenient indentation for routing the cable around the inside of the handle curve. I paired these with bar-end shifters with the cables coming out in the traditional forward direction one hand-hold length in on the drops, and there's still plenty of room for my large hands in any position, without bumping into the protruding shifter cable. Also, they are much lighter and stiffer than my old steel drop bars; I didn't think that would be noticeable when riding, but it definitely is!
Note that if you replace traditional drop bars with these, you *will* shorten your reach, which results in sitting more upright. This is more comfortable for long-distance riding, and I am preferring it so far, but if you want to stay bent over in the same position then you may have to look into a slightly longer stem.
Also, for aesthetics, the shiny metalic/silver part that remains exposed is REALLY classy looking, especially paired with a silver shiny aluminum stem.
This was one of the only options for a short reach shallow drop bar in a modern compact curve with a 26.0 clamp diameter. Offers a more versatile/usable drop position for a regular person kind of rider and looks great on a classically styled steel road frame with a quill stem without needing to go to a goofy threadless adapter.
If I were to want any changes it would be a flatter top section and a 38cm option for my narrow shouldered lady friend.
Super quick ship to Canada. I think it was only 3 bus days. Great tracking. But mercy after the exchange and taxes it was pricey. Price would have ended up the same if purchasing here but no LBS could get me a silver set in the 26.0.
An excellent product by a reliable manufacturer. I wanted shorter reach bars for my older Campagnolo shifters, and this is about as short as reach comes these days, at least as far as I could find on the internet. Delivery was faster than expected. Price and availability were better than any other store.
I got an early 80s all-chrome Olympia bike for my first Eroica CA ride this April. Beautiful bike, w 3TTT stem and handlebars. But although the seller said the bars were 42cm, they were actually 38 and I just couldn't feel 'expanded.' Then someone on another forum suggested I get a pair of the HWY1 bars. Easy to mount on that classic stem, beautiful polished finish in the middle with great aligning graphics. And the shot-peened finish really 'grabs' the adhesive on my bar tape. And Jenson USA shipped it to me in 24 hrs even though I paid the standard rate (it helps that I'm also in SoCal).
Bars came with not one but TWO factory defects, a triangular bulge running along two inches of one side of the flats and the right side drop (reach) is about 5mm longer than the other. Jenson replaced the bars with no issue, but I won't buy another Soma handlebar again.
Nice finish. I really like the stiffness and good looks of these bars. The drops are supremely comfortable. My main gripe is the transition from the tops into the hoods. With Ultegra 6800 levers, I could not get a flat transition to the tops without angling the drops to the point where they were unusable. There is a resultant ramp down into the lever hoods which creates a weird pressure point on the ball of my hand and less usable bar. Dumb. Also, these are kind of heavy for an alloy bar, about 50 grams more than most other 7000-series bars.
